I was totally blown away by the selection and quality of “mat art” that had been created for this event. Works have been painted by the area’s wonderful artists, who continually donate their talents in support of worthy community projects. And some mats were family projects, in support of these great family facilities in Annapolis Royal.

So to back up for a moment, the artwork in question has all been painted on Floor Cloths/Mats. Floorcloths, known as “oly clothes” in England, are hand painted canvas rugs – best described as art for your floor. They are made of 100% cotton canvas (primed, painted and sealed) and suitable for use anywhere in your home. Many people choose to hang their mats on a wall instead.

And the event in question is called “John Dunsworth – An Evening of Stories“, at King’s Theatre in Annapolis Royal – Saturday, February 26 at 7:00pm. The evening is in support of the local swimming pool, and the development of a Skate Park. You can also read more in this great Annapolis Spectator article.

The mats will be on display at King’s Theatre all week, and in many cases will be sold by Silent Auction, meaning you can bid on them all week as well. Several pieces will be auctioned live at the Saturday evening show, along with some other cool prize packages. As is the custom, I watched the Superbowl last night. And as is the custom, the Superbowl organizers chose to have a music “superstar” sing the National Anthem. In fact, Christine Aguilera sang both the Star Spangled Banner AND America the Beautiful… and she slaughtered them both! (Edit/Addition: I stand corrected… she did not sing America the Beautiful after all, it was Lea Michele and not too bad a job on it. Thanks to an early reader who pointed this out to me!).

Sure, she messed up the words to Star Spangled Banner – a bad faux pas, but she’s human. That’s not my gripe.

My issue is that her ‘rendtitions’ of these two traditional pieces of music, known and loved by all Americans, resembled very little the actual music as it was intended to be sung.  The composers actually put all that musical notation on the page for a reason – this is their music and we have no right to change it to “make it our own”.

We encourage our citizens to be patriotic and “join in the singing of our national anthem” and then it is sung in a way that nobody could possibly sing along. Good grief!

It seems the “superstars” aren’t interested in “leading” an enthusiastic audience in the singing of the anthem – they want to put on a show… it’s all about them! I’d rather see a choir, or a group of school children, hired to do this service – it would be infinitely nicer and more respectful than what these so-called superstars manage each year. And if it must be a superstar (and why must it?) then they should be handed the music and the lyrics and told to sing it the way it was written.

There is a time and place for experimenting with artistic expression… but this ain’t it.

My country, Canada… respected worldwide as a democratic, peaceful, multicultural land. We respect diversity, we respect freedom of expression… or do we? For anyone who happened to be in outer space for the past two weeks and missed the news, our “strong & free” country has banned a piece of music from the airwaves because it contains the word “faggot”.

Now I’ve heard much worse language in music on the radio, and I’ve heard language on television that is quite vile and entirely unnecessary. And there are lots of shows on television that stereotype various walks of life, but they continue to receive airtime. However, one single word, which incidentally has a variety of definitions, most of which are harmless, has caused the banning of Dire Straits “Money for Nothing” in Canada.

Now in the same tune, they indicate that “Chicks are free” so I suppose I should be insulted by that (being a ‘chick’ and all), but I’m not… it’s just a song. It’s a piece of music. They’re words that, like poetry and artwork,  will often mean different things to different people. If you don’t like it, turn it off.

A colleague of mine, Editor of the local paper, wrote a terrific editorial on this subject which I encourage you to read. He hit the nail on the head as far as I am concerned!

And while I’m on the subject… are we going to re-write every piece of literature, every history book, every Christmas carol just to ensure that they are so absolutely ‘vanilla’ that nobody could possibly take exception to any words therein? I mean, heaven forbid that we could sing hymns and carols in their original words anymore – can’t sing “Sons of earth” because apparently “chicks” like me find that insulting. Do we re-write the classics because they had language that we now consider inappropriate (albeit for good reason)? Do we hire a master artist to “fix” all the great pieces of artwork that have scenes someone might find offensive?  Practically every old book or movie portrays women as the subservient sex – should we ban them all now? Where does this stop?

We can’t erase the past, nor should we – it helps us understand the present and prepare for the future. History is an incredible teacher – the good, the bad and the ugly.

Yes, it’s only about a song today… but what’s next?

Terry Kelly, great singer and songwriter, created a masterpiece after experiencing Nov 11, at 11am, in a store in Nova Scotia and the reactions of those in the store at the time. Have a look/listen and think about it…

Another gem I found on Youtube… a version of that great John McCrae poem that we all know and love… this is a really well done version , very moving. I think it’s the music that really makes it… thus says the musician in me!

So today I’m thinking of all the things that SHOULD be on my mind on Nov 11… and being VERY proud of my nephew who left Nova Scotia today bound for
Afghanistan…

A Happy and Proud Annapolitan

Are you confused yet???

Actually, this all makes sense when you unwind all the thanksgivings and anniversaries. 300 years ago, a Thanksgiving Service was held in Annapolis Royal (originally ‘Port Royal’),  that would come to mark the beginning of continual Anglican ministry in Canada. And so, on Thanksgiving Sunday 2010, St. Luke’s parish held a special service – “Thanksgiving on the Anniversary of a Parish”. You follow now?

I was asked to perform Shutterbug duties for the event, and therefore had an enviable vantage point from the seldom used balcony in St. Luke’s. That allowed me a somewhat detached ‘observer status’ for the service which in turn allowed my mind to contemplate life and religion in general. The event was steeped in tradition, in pomp and circumstance… I love all these things. And the pipe organ, oboe, flute & cello, along with an enthusiastic choir and congregation made for some wonderful music.  Yet, stepping back a little further, and imagining that I was a newly landed alien… what an odd thing a church service can be. The ‘costumes’, the rituals and recitations, the obedient responses from a congregation of independent-minded human beings from all walks of life. Yes, it would seem very strange indeed to a true outsider, wouldn’t it?

But I’m not exactly an outsider (although I’m sure my truancy every Sunday is duly noted). And my mind wanders a bit more to my grandfather, Canon Frank Fry, an Anglican minister in rural Nova Scotia most of his life.  Father Fry, as he was known for the most part, ministered in the time when clergy travelled to every nook and cranny in their Parish to provide services in the smallest and most remote churches… he used to tell of timing services in his “island” churches by the tides – because he could only drive to and from these areas when the tide was low. How sad he would be to see how these small churches, often the social focal point in a community, have gone the way of the dodo bird in recent decades.  Perhaps necessary… but sad nonetheless.

Now some would say I should have been listening to the service and the sermon, and not daydreaming… well, I was, sort of.  I’ll blame it on the balcony! Good news is, in spite of all my mental deliberations, I did manage to snag some photos! Check them out here, in my Shutterbug Blog.

A Happy Annapolitan

The Grant Potter Family Benefit was held last Saturday, just two weeks after Grant’s tragic death (rather than starting from the beginning, I invite you to read about the whys and wherefores in this previous post). The event was a huge success by all accounts – the support shown in all ways was completely overwhelming.

The Fire Hall was filled to capacity most of the day, and the generosity was evident from the get-go. Contributions of gifts, food, items for auction, time, talent… and of course, of money. A testament to how many lives Grant touched, and to how much Grant and his family are loved and appreciated.

Why else, truly, would someone pay over $100 for a pie? I mean, pies are great, but really!

Then, the following day, a super turnout at the Terry Fox Run, postponed from an earlier date due to the circumstances.

So what’s the good cause today? Grant Potter was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident two weeks ago. Grant was the Town’s Recreation Director, a community and church leader, and a strong advocate for active living. And perhaps most importantly, he was a family man, leaving behind a wife and three children.  (For a bit more on Grant, from my personal perspective, click here.)

So to honour Grant’s memory, and to provide financial support to his family in the time ahead, Grant’s friends and colleagues have organized the Grant Potter Family Benefit – a day of fun, music, sports & games, auctions… all to raise money for the family.

And don’t forget about the Terry Fox Run on Sunday October 3, starting at Town Hall at 2pm. This event, normally organized b y Grant, was postponed from a couple weeks ago for obvious reasons. We ask everyone to come out Sunday to walk, bike or run as a tribute to Grant AND Terry Fox and to raise money for cancer research.

That wasn’t really intended to be assembled as  a poem, although it does rhyme…

This past few days has been another rude awakening as to how short life really is, and in some cases far too short! How shocking it was Thursday morning to hear of the death of Grant Potter, a friend, colleague and former classmate. Grant died in an accident on his way to work. Left his house just like always, but never went home again. And since that time, everyone struggles to process the news, and the reality. Age 46. Wife and three young kids. An absolutely great guy – anyone would be hard pressed to say anything negative about Grant, just as in life Grant could never say anything negative about anyone else! Life just isn’t fair sometimes.

Grant and his family have very strong faith… it is helping the family through these days, and we all know it meant that Grant was “ready” to go whenever his time came. I know Grant would have spent his life looking forward to an afterlife, and it is comforting to know that.

It was touching to see so many people come out to the funeral home last evening… Grant touched many lives – community, church, his work, his hobbies, his former classmates… the list goes on. I am certain his funeral today will be a true celebration of his life.

Grant was the type of person who did “Gather his rosebuds while he may…“. He lived his life well, he put family and church before anything else, he had good balance in his life, and he genuinely cared about all those around him. We could all wish to be as pure-of-heart as Grant. (Coincidentally, I recently purchased a framed cross-stitch of “Gather ye Rosebuds“… I must hang it in a place of honour now and remember its meaning!)

On a lighter note, Grant was an avid Bruins fan (yes, Bruin’s fans still do exist) and was happy to chat with anyone about the latest hockey game and how the Bruins fared. Since I am a diehard Habs fan, this led to many debates between us on the merits of each team, and some good ribbing when the Habs outlasted the Bruins in the playoffs! I will never watch another NHL game that I don’t think about Grant!

So for him, today, just this once, I say this… Go Bruins!
